Emerson may have said it best “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”  And in this spirit we congratulate Christian F. Gainer of the University of Arizona who has won the 2013 Young Investigator Award sponsored by Ocean Optics, Halma’s world leader in miniature photonics technology.

Gainer was honoured for his work with his advisor Marek Romanowski, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Arizona. Their work describes the use of multiphoton scanning microscopy for three-dimensional modelling of colon and ovarian cancer.  These types of cancer affect more than 1.5M people each year. Significant symptoms typically appear in later stages of these cancers making treatment difficult and mortality quite high once discovered (source).  Gainer’s work may one day lead to better detection and screening as well as new treatment options.

Ocean Optics has sponsored the Young Investigator Award since 2008, part of a long tradition of supporting young scientists and educators from around the world.

“We are energized and inspired by the efforts and discoveries of researchers early in their careers,” said Michael Allen, Ocean Optics Director, Marketing and Product Development. “Our support for these young men and women underscores our commitment to the vision of changing the world for the better through optical sensing.”

For us at Halma, Christian’s project represents a fine example of our corporate mission “To protect lives and improve the quality of life for people worldwide”.  We wish him much success in the future and hope his work inspires others to follow the trail he has blazed.
