Here at Halma we are inspired by the exuberant energy, innovation and dedication of young scientists working hard to change the world for the better. Our hope is that they become the leaders of a brighter tomorrow! We are pleased to congratulate and recognise the work of Gabriel Orsinger of the University of Arizona, winner of the 2014 Young Investigator Award, sponsored by Ocean Optics, one of our photonic companies in our Environmental and Analysis Sector.
Orsinger wins the award for his work with advisor Dr. Marek Romanowski, Associate Professor of BioMedical Engineering at the University of Arizona. Together they studied the use of light with gold-coated liposomes as a tool for studying cellular behaviour.
Their work focused on mechanisms of cell “communication” and growth. In the future, this work may be a tool to save lives by providing early detection and then treatment of cancer and other diseases.
Ocean Optics has a long tradition of encouraging young people around the world to get involved in science from awards for young investigators, volunteering to engage kids in science to direct grants to teachers and schools. Since 2008, Ocean Optics has sponsored this particular award at the US Society of Photo-optical Instrumentation Engineers.
“Ocean Optics works closely with researchers across many disciplines. We believe these passionate innovators can harness the power of spectroscopy to protect and improve the quality of life for people worldwide,” said David Creasey, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Ocean Optics.
Orsinger’s work is attempting to do just that, and we wish him every success in the future.
